CYANOBACTERIA VISUAL MONITORING
Help us track blooms + protect public health!
Help us keep an eye out for toxic cyanobacteria blooms.
It’s as easy as a quick photo on the go–help us protect public health.
BECOME A CYANOBACTERIA VISUAL MONITOR!
Do you walk, bike, or paddle along the Charles? Do you wonder how you can help our river?
Cyanobacteria are naturally occurring organisms that in high quantities, are toxic to humans + pets. Cyanobacteria blooms can develop quickly, and we need volunteers like you to be the eyes and ears of the river.
How to ID Cyanobacteria Blooms:
Use our quick and easy submission form to record your observations.
1. OBSERVE THE WATER
View the examples of what cyanobacteria can look like. If you DON’T see cyanobacteria, still submit observations! This is still important data.
2. TAKE PHOTOS
Use your camera to take three photos:
Landscape view of the river
Top-down view of the river’s surface
Use a jar to sample water - photograph the jar to observe the water’s clarity.
3. NOTE RIVER CONDITIONS
Record your specific location, date & time, notes about the water surface and clarity, and any additional photos. Submit your data!
