Dams & Migratory Fish

Before colonization, the Charles River was home to a vibrant population of migratory fish. As dams were constructed on the Charles River, American Shad, Blueback Herring, Alewives, Rainbow Smelt, White Perch, Striped Bass, and American Eel lost a staggering two-thirds of their available habitat. Today, aging, functionless dams persist, and migratory fish are facing new challenges from climate change.

But we’re working to restore fish passage by removing dams and replacing culverts! Join us for a webinar to learn about work to restore aquatic connectivity statewide, and how we are applying lessons learned to the Charles River watershed.

Speakers include Allison Bowden, Director of Science & Strategy at The Nature Conservancy, Noah Snyder, Department Chair of the Boston College Earth & Environmental Sciences Program, River Science Program Manager Lisa Kumpf, and Climate Resilience Specialist Robert Kearns.
