50 Years of Clean Water Protections!

On October 18, 1972, the landmark legislation that transformed our river from the “Dirty Water” of the past to the Charles River we know and love today was enacted.

By setting a broad vision for restored waterways and providing a regulatory framework to achieve it, the Clean Water Act provided the necessary leverage to hold polluters accountable and ensure clean, fishable, swimmable rivers.

Today, the work is far from over–– the Clean Water Act is under attack and climate change is amplifying threats to water quality like stormwater pollution, combined sewer overflows, and warming waters. Our work is more important than ever.

Charles River

Charles River Watershed Association’s mission is to use science, advocacy, and the law to protect, restore, and enhance the Charles River and its watershed. We develop science-based strategies to increase resilience, protect public health, and promote environmental equity as we confront a changing climate.
