A Look Inside A CSO

Thank you to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) for an informative tour of what happens when we flush. In Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, and Somerville, several aging combined-sewer systems bring stormwater & wastewater together. Under dry conditions, wastewater will travel to Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, but in heavy storms, much of this “combined sewage overflow” (or CSO) flows through Prison Point & Cottage Farm, two CSO Treatment Facilities along the Charles, or dumps directly into our rivers. ICYMI read our Boston Globe op-ed on the need to eliminate these sewage releases once and for all.

Charles River

Charles River Watershed Association’s mission is to use science, advocacy, and the law to protect, restore, and enhance the Charles River and its watershed. We develop science-based strategies to increase resilience, protect public health, and promote environmental equity as we confront a changing climate.
