Celebrating Black History Month
How can I celebrate Black History Month?
Read about Dr. David Brower, the father of environmental justice and the first person to prove the link between race and exposure to pollution back in 1979.
Take some time to learn about and celebrate these Black environmentalists whose contributions have been central to modern-day environmentalism.
If you don’t already, follow some of these incredible Black environmental leaders and activists to be a part of the conversation of Black environmentalism in the 21st century.
Support nonprofit organizations such as Outdoor Afro, which addresses the lack of racial diversity in environmental sciences by promoting Black relationships with nature.
Familiarize yourself with local efforts to address environmental injustice, like the work done by the Boston Food Forest Coalition.
Many Black History Month events are happening around Boston, which are fantastic opportunities to learn about the rich history of how Black leaders have shaped our communities and how their influences remain relevant today. February is an opportunity to celebrate Black joy by attending the Boston Globe’s 4th annual Black History Month Film Festival. You can also celebrate Black History Month through your reading list! The Boston Public Library Special Collections highlights works from Black authors and artists within their collections, or you can take the recommendations from three Boston writers about what to read this Black History Month. You can support Black-owned local businesses by participating in the Boston Black Restaurant Challenge by dining weekly at a Black-owned food and drink establishment in Boston. Whichever way you choose to show your support, be sure to celebrate Black History Month!
