Intern Farewell

And just like that, we bid farewell to another talented cohort of interns!

LOU FOUST participated in various River Science fieldwork activities and took the lead in producing training videos for our Volunteer Monthly Monitoring and Habitat Assessment volunteer programs. He enjoyed learning how to edit videos, practicing communication skills, and driving a boat for water sampling! Lou’s internship experience allowed him to consider a future career in the nonprofit industry and let him explore some of his interests and strengths.

SIMRAN PADGETT completed a comprehensive analysis of our cyanobacteria monitoring data to create a model equation that determines the cell count of cyanobacteria based on fluorometer Phycocyanin readings. Phycocyanin is an accessory pigment protein to chlorophyll that is present in cyanobacteria. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health defines a cyanobacteria bloom as having 70,000 or more cyanobacteria cells per milliliter of water. Determining cell counts is challenging, so with this new model, we will be able to use our phycocyanin readings to determine cyanobacteria cell counts.

ABBY VAN SELOUS assisted in reviewing Master Plan processes and updating CRWA’s database on watershed communities, and educational materials. Abby also helped plan spring River Ambassadors events and attended community meetings and webinars related to Environmental Justice and community engagement.

Charles River

Charles River Watershed Association’s mission is to use science, advocacy, and the law to protect, restore, and enhance the Charles River and its watershed. We develop science-based strategies to increase resilience, protect public health, and promote environmental equity as we confront a changing climate.
