Over 100 Culverts Assessed: Advancing Aquatic Connectivity on the East Coast

This field season, CRWA assessed over 100 culverts! Our sites ranged from urban tributaries like the Muddy River, to suburban streams such as Godfrey Brook, and even rural stream crossings in the upper reaches of our watershed. The data collected during these assessments contributes to a multi-state database that helps researchers understand how fish and other aquatic animals migrate along the East Coast. These evaluations also allow us to prioritize the replacement of undersized culverts, reducing the risk of future flooding.

This work wouldn’t have been possible without the support of municipal staff and volunteers who partnered with us to assess culverts and earn their NAACC Aquatic Connectivity Certification. Interested in getting involved and becoming certified? Stay tuned for upcoming training opportunities!
