Public Meeting: Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Update for the Charles River and Alewife Brook/Mystic River

SPEAK UP AGAINST SEWER OVERFLOWS INTO THE CHARLES RIVER!

On January 22, 2025, the Cities of Cambridge and Somerville and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) will host a public meeting about the current state of CSOs in the Charles and Mystic Rivers.

Despite being illegal under the Clean Water Act, for over three decades, sewage discharges have been allowed in the Lower Basin of the Charles River as the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA), Boston Water & Sewer Commission (BWSC), and City of Cambridge upgrade sewer infrastructure and treatment facilities to reduce overflows. In the past decade, progress has halted.

MWRA made significant progress in reducing sewage discharges, but tens of millions of gallons of sewage-laden stormwater are still entering the river every year – and that volume is growing thanks to climate change. It’s time to finish the job and put an end to CSOs.
