Don’t miss out on Cambridge Combined Sewer Overflow Notifications

The city of Cambridge has changed its system to notify the public about combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into the Charles River and Alewife Brook. To stay in the know about when sewage is being discharged into the river, sign up for Cambridge CSO Alerts >

10 active CSO outfalls discharge raw or partially treated sewage into the Charles River. This year alone, 23 CSOs occurred associated with 8 different wet weather events. These discharges released 44 million gallons of sewage mixed with stormwater, restricting recreational use for 16 days. With climate change causing more frequent heavy rains, we can expect these discharges to increase. That means more sewage is going into our river and more days when it’s unsafe to boat on the Charles. Raw sewage being dumped into the Charles River is unacceptable. Join our “Cut the Crap” campaign to push for an end to combined sewer overflows.
