Muddy River: The Heart of Fenway Webinars — Key Takeaways

In collaboration with the Emerald Necklace Conservancy (ENC) and the Consensus Building Institute (CBI), CRWA hosted two fall webinars about the iconic Muddy River. The 3.5 mile  river flows  from Jamaica Pond, through  ENC’s  Riverway, to the Charles River. The Muddy contributes significantly to the pollution of the Charles. As part of the Muddy River Restoration Project, dredging, riparian planting, and invasive plant removal have been implemented across the sub-watershed, including in  Boston, Brookline, and Newton.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • The Muddy River is not just a river, it is an entire, interconnected watershed. It spans Boston, Brookline, and Newton. Brookline is a very important part of the watershed, as a majority of the Muddy River subwatershed resides within the Town’s boundary.

  • Restoring the Muddy River requires us to address the root challenges of urban drainage, including wet weather pollution, due to stormwater runoff, and dry weather pollution, including illicit discharges.

  • In order to achieve a clean, healthy river, we need to reimagine our use of land and park spaces within the Muddy River watershed.

What happens when an ecologically connecting, aquatic thread gets obscured? Here, in collaboration with Charles River Watershed Association, the Consensus Building Institute brings together people with connections to different aspects of the Muddy, all to talk about how the river came to its present condition— and about what the river means for the world around it.
