TAKE ACTION: Urge Legislators to Create the Flood Risk Protection Program
Climate change isn’t coming––it’s here. Precipitation during heavy rain events increased by 55% between 1958 and 2016 in the northeastern United States. And, as our climate continues to warm, we will see even more severe storms.
What does this mean for our watershed? More flooding. In our highly urbanized watershed home to over a million people, our homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure are vulnerable as well as our river's health.
We have yet to see investment at the scale we need––neither flood barriers or nature-based solutions alone are enough. The time is now to create the Flood Risk Protection Program Bill (H.876, S.557, S.599) to protect neighborhoods from severe, repetitive flooding.
This bill would create a commission to study and develop a program to acquire and restore flood-prone areas in the Commonwealth. If created, this program would empower property owners and renters to move out of harm’s way, create new outdoor recreation opportunities, restore wildlife habitat, and increase statewide climate resiliency.
Today, we are testifying in support of the Flood Risk Protection Program at the Joint Committee on Environment and Natural Resources hearing, but we need you to urge the committee to support this program.
It’s as easy as just one click––just add your name and why you support the creation of the Flood Risk Protection Program to protect our watershed from catastrophic flood damage.
