The End of the 2024 Herring Count

It's officially summer, and the herring have finished migrating from the ocean to the Charles to spawn. This year's fish monitoring program provided invaluable insight into the ecological migration of herring into our watershed.

Volunteer counters saw more than 25,000 herring swimming up the fish ladder in Watertown. We want to thank the incredible volunteers who spent countless mornings, afternoons, and evenings at the river to help us capture this vital data. A special shout-out goes to Sally O., who volunteered for 43 shifts! We couldn't have done it without you. See you next year!
